Journal

The Institution's "Journal and Report of Proceedings" has been published each year since 1884.

The PWI journal is issued free to members four times a year.  It is an A4-size high quality colour publication and contains technical articles and papers of permanent way and associated railway interest, plus news of Institution activities and events.  Part 1/2004 was the first issue to go over to A4 format; not only has the change been widely welcomed but it has also enabled the editor to arrange and display the content in the best possible manner.

The latest issue, Pt1/2008, is its usual 56 pages full colour A4 and contains an excellent paper by Phil Kirkland on West Coast Main Line mechanical tamping, an interesting survey entitled ‘Permanent Way Made Simpler’ by Michael Arshad, and Ted Hamer’s heritage-style history of St Pancras station from its inception to its modern image.  Also included is a description of cwr relaying in the 1960s on the Western Region, using the Boyer-Schwarz gantries.  An Australian aspect is provided by Max Shuard’s interesting description of the extension to the Glenelg Tramway in Adelaide.

This issue also contains full reports of the recent PWI seminars at Amsterdam and London.  Correspondence topics range from broad gauge pointwork, Lake District railways, reasons for choosing flat bottom rail, the Lewisham accident, drop testing and the Looe branch.
